Why “I Love You” Gets Stuck in a Capricorn's Throat

Capricorns take “I love you” so seriously that they'd rather show it with rides home, reminders, and quiet help. Learn their language and you'll hear what they mean.

The night before Valentine's Day, Jay stands in front of the card rack at a bookstore for almost twenty minutes. He picks up one that says “Love You Forever,” puts it back, and finally chooses a plain card with nothing printed on it. At home he writes three drafts. The card he actually hands over says just one line: “Thank you for this year.”

His girlfriend is a little taken aback. What she doesn't know is that two full drafts are still sitting in his desk drawer, never sent.

Before the words come out, he proofreads them

Capricorns tend to edit everything in their heads before they say it. Is this too much? What if I can't live up to it? To him, “I love you” carries real weight, like signing a contract. He'd rather say less than make a promise he might not be able to keep.

So what you hear from him is usually practical: “Text me when you get home.” “It's going to rain tomorrow, bring an umbrella.” “I asked about that thing for you.” None of it sounds romantic. For a Capricorn, though, this is the most reliable kind of love he knows how to give.

Saturn makes love feel like a responsibility

Capricorn's ruling planet, Saturn, is all about responsibility and time. That's why Capricorns rarely treat love casually. Once they're in, they start thinking far ahead: how much to save before moving in together, how two careers can fit, whose family to visit for the holidays. He's busy laying a foundation, so he says less.

There's another reason, too. Many Capricorns learned early to process feelings on their own. Saying “I need you” feels a bit like showing weakness, and it makes him uncomfortable, maybe even embarrassed. So even when he misses you badly, the message he sends is just “What are you up to?”

Some Capricorns even confess in very roundabout ways. Instead of “I miss you,” he says “I happened to be near your office.” Instead of “I care about you,” he puts your insurance renewal date and your scooter inspection in his own calendar and reminds you when they come up. Underneath, all of those sentences mean the same thing.

If you haven't learned to translate them, though, it's easy to find him boring, or even to wonder whether he loves you at all.

When he goes quiet, he's waiting for you too

The time Yun had a fight with her Capricorn boyfriend, he didn't reply all night. She assumed he was furious and almost brought up breaking up. Then the next morning he showed up outside her building holding egg crepes from her favorite breakfast shop and said, “I spent the whole night figuring out the right way to say this.”

A Capricorn not speaking up doesn't mean he doesn't need you. He's still working out how to say it without getting it wrong. He does want to take that wall down. He just does it slowly, one brick at a time.

Small ways to make it easier for him to open up

If you want to hear what's on his mind, lower the bar first. Instead of asking “Do you even love me?”, try “Was there a moment today with me that made you happy?” A specific question is easier for him to answer and makes him less nervous.

And when he shows love through actions, tell him plainly that you got it. Something like “You fixed my bike. I felt so taken care of.” That kind of reply lets him know his way of loving is understood, and next time he'll feel braver about saying more. Every now and then, say “I miss you” first. The “Me too” he sends back may have taken a lot of courage to type.

The first time Byeol Bunny told a close friend “I'm so glad you're around,” it was on the friend's birthday. He'd practiced for a whole week, and the moment he said it, he turned red and ran off. The friend later said it was the best present they'd ever gotten. So it's okay to take your time getting the words out. Once they're said, they count.
