Capricorns Spend Smart and Treat Every Dollar as a Safety Net

Capricorns are careful with money and often get called cheap. Really, they cut back on the everyday so they can be generous where it counts, and feel secure doing it.

It's the department store anniversary sale. Kiki's friends are crowding the beauty counter for spend-and-get gifts, while her Capricorn boyfriend stands nearby tapping on his phone calculator. “If you count the free samples, this set actually costs more per milliliter.” Her friends roll their eyes, but he earnestly shows everyone the math. In the end, all he buys that day is a pair of discounted running shoes, because his old ones are three years old.

He isn't stingy, he just knows exactly where his money should go

Capricorns get called cheap a lot. They check the bill at group dinners, compare prices online, and rarely buy on impulse. Get to know one, though, and you'll see they have clear rules about money: save wherever you can on daily stuff, and don't hold back when something truly matters.

He might pack his own lunch every day yet happily pay for a professional course. He might go three years without a new phone yet give his parents a generous red envelope on their birthdays. To a Capricorn, money is a tool, meant for making life better and making the people he loves feel secure.

Saturn makes him very aware of “later”

Capricorn's ruling planet, Saturn, is linked to time and building things up, which gives Capricorns a sense of caution from a young age. He'll think: What if I lose my job next year? How much will my parents' care cost when they're older? How many years to save for a home? In his head these aren't anxieties so much as a to-do list he works through one item at a time.

That's why many Capricorns start budgeting early, set up automatic fund investments, and open separate accounts for travel, emergencies, and retirement. Along with the money, he's saving up a feeling: if something goes wrong, I can handle it.

That sense of security extends to the people around him. When a friend suddenly needs a loan, a Capricorn won't make a fuss about it, but he'll ask for the details first, then decide how much to lend and when it should be paid back, and finally confirm it all in a message. Some people find that too formal. For him, being clear is how you keep a friendship intact.

He rarely follows investment trends, either. When everyone around him is talking about some hot stock, he'll look up the company's financial reports first. If he can't understand it, he doesn't touch it. He'd rather earn slowly than lie awake at night.

He does spend, as long as it's worth it

Capricorns do like nice things. They appreciate quality and durability. A well-cut coat, a bag that'll last ten years, a really good kitchen knife: he'll save up for those. What he hates is buying something you use twice and toss, or spending just to look good.

Sean, a Capricorn, says his biggest splurge ever was taking his family to a hard-to-book restaurant on his 30th birthday. He made the reservation six months ahead and set aside a bit of each paycheck for it. The meal was pricey, he says, but watching his mom snap photos of every dish made it completely worth it.

How to talk about money with a Capricorn

If you're dating or living with a Capricorn, being upfront about money works best. Agree on how to split rent and how much to budget for trips. Settling it early puts him at ease and is much kinder to the relationship than leaving things vague.

If you feel he's saving to an extreme, try framing it differently: “You've already hit your savings goal this month. Want to use the extra on a nice dinner?” When a Capricorn hears that the goal is done, he's far more willing to treat himself. Getting him to spend carelessly is hard. Getting him to reward his own hard work is much easier.

Byeol Bunny has a little tin piggy bank. Whenever it fills up, he uses it to buy a bag of the best organic carrots he can find. He says that way, every coin he drops in already tastes a little sweet.
