Mars Enters Its Retrograde Shadow on Nov 5: 3 Things to Prepare Before Early 2027

Mercury and Venus turn direct in mid-November, but Mars is the one that will drag into next spring. Preparing now makes January far less hectic.

Mercury and Venus Turn Direct Soon, Then Mars Takes Over

Right now five planets are retrograde at the same time: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The good news is that Mercury turns direct on Nov 13 and Venus on Nov 14, while Saturn (Dec 11) and Neptune (Dec 13) follow in mid-December. Many people assume they can relax after mid-November, but the next planet to watch is Mars.

Mars is in Leo now and reaches 21° Leo around Nov 5, which marks the start of its pre-retrograde shadow. It moves into Virgo around Nov 26, stations retrograde at 10° Virgo on Jan 10, 2027, backs into Leo on Feb 21, turns direct at 21° Leo on Apr 1, re-enters Virgo on May 14, and finally clears the shadow around Jun 8.

What Is a Shadow Period?

When a planet goes retrograde, from Earth it looks as if it's walking backward for a while. The stretch of degrees it covers three times is called the shadow: once before the retrograde, once while moving backward, and once more after it turns direct. For this Mars cycle, that stretch runs from 21° Leo to 10° Virgo.

Think of the pre-retrograde shadow as a preview. Small issues that show up now, like a project that keeps dragging, a conversation that goes nowhere or minor signals from your body, tend to grow during the retrograde and need a second look.

The First Half of 2027 Moves at a Slower Pace

Besides Mars, Jupiter turns retrograde in Leo on Dec 13 and stays that way until Apr 13, 2027, while Uranus remains retrograde in Gemini until Feb 8, 2027. So from January to April, Mars and Jupiter are retrograde together and Uranus hasn't turned around yet. The mood of looking back and slowing down will carry well into the first half of 2027.

Mars rules drive, momentum and temper. During a Mars retrograde, plans are more likely to stall, work may need to be redone halfway through, and emotions can flare quickly. Slowing your pace in advance is often the best way to protect your progress.

3 Things to Prepare Now

1. Work: Build a Buffer Into Big Projects

If you have a large project due to launch or deliver between January and March, add one or two weeks of buffer to the schedule now. During a Mars retrograde, processes that looked smooth can slip because requirements keep changing, vendors reply slowly or details get lost in handovers.

Don't plan to push a brand-new initiative hard in January either. A better approach is to sort out materials and roles in November and December, use the retrograde to fix things and fill gaps, and launch properly after Mars turns direct in April.

2. Love and Friendships: Talk It Through Before Tempers Rise

When Mars is retrograde, frustrations you've been holding in are more likely to come out all at once. Small things you'd usually let go, like who paid a little extra when splitting the bill or who canceled weekend plans again, can pile up into a big fight by January.

These two-plus months of shadow are a good time to clear the air while you're still calm. If you've typed a long angry message on LINE, save it as a draft and reread it the next day. If something bothers you about your partner or roommate, set a time to talk face to face, which leaves less room for misunderstanding than a back-and-forth over text.

3. Routine and Money: Don't Overdo Workouts, Plan Big Purchases

Mars is also tied to physical stamina. If you plan to start going to the gym or sign up for a race, build up gradually rather than jumping to a heavy workload, and if you feel unwell, go by your doctor's professional advice.

On the money side, the big November 11 sales and the year-end shopping season arrive back to back, and it's easy to check out a full cart on impulse. For large expenses like a new phone, home appliances or plane tickets, make a list and set a timeline and budget first instead of swiping your card in a rush.

One Reminder for Each Sign

  • Aries: Mars is your ruling planet, so wrap up what's on your plate before January and avoid starting too many new things at once.
  • Taurus: For big changes at home, like moving or renovating, leave extra room in the timeline.
  • Gemini: Quick thinking is your strength, but take one more look at your tone before posting in group chats.
  • Cancer: Income and spending may shift, so fit large purchases into next month's budget first.
  • Leo: Jupiter is retrograde in your sign and Mars backs into it in February, so take time to get clear on what you want before rushing to prove yourself.
  • Virgo: Mars stations retrograde in your sign, so no matter how detailed your plan is, leave a slot open for surprises.
  • Libra: Invitations and social obligations pile up, so turn down the ones you don't want early.
  • Scorpio: Your work goals and your manager's expectations may need realigning, so talk through direction before January.
  • Sagittarius: For travel abroad or study plans, check your documents and registration deadlines early.
  • Capricorn: Read the details of shared finances, loans or contracts twice before signing.
  • Aquarius: Partners or collaborators may see things the opposite way, so hear them out before you respond.
  • Pisces: Your daily routine is easy to disrupt, so look after sleep and meals first and don't take on too much work at once.

Slowing Down Now Saves Wasted Effort Later

There's no need to fear a Mars retrograde. What it asks is that you check first and then move. While Mars is still in the shadow in November and December, review your work schedule, how you communicate, your routine and your budget, and you'll be better placed to handle things calmly when the retrograde begins in January 2027.
